It makes sense that leaders would rely on the behaviors that got them to where they are in the first place. But to be successful at leading change, they must learn to recognize and act when it’s necessary to evolve their own behaviors… Changing behavior can be hard, as anyone who has tried it can attest.

4 Steps to Help You Change Your Behavior when Needed:

  • Increase Self-Awareness(1) regularly seek feedback on how we’re perceived, (2) be wary of thoughts & feelings that feedback is unnecessary or inappropriate
  • Make Commitments – Share with others our intention to change behavior/tendencies (and give permission to “call us out” when we don’t)
  • Overcome Interference – mitigate thoughts that derail our intentions
  • Practice – Successful change often arises from trial & error…  practice small changes and learn from the experiences
